Grading Syllabus For The Traditional Tang Soo Do Association

3rd to 2nd Gup (Red Belt, One Tag)

Basic requirements

Current membership to the TTSDA
Approval of the instructor to grade
Regular class attendance of at least 3 months since the last meeting
Minimum age 9 years

General Knowledge

General rules of class attendance
Basic Tang Soo Do etiquette
Basic Tang Soo Do terminology
Correct Tang Soo Do attitudes
Additional knowledge of Tang Soo Do terminology
Be able to count to ten in Korean
The five basic principles of Tang Soo Do
Understanding the principles behind balance, speed, power and focus
Conversant in Tang Soo Do terminology
Understanding Tang Soo Do philosophy

Be able to assist Instructors in teaching and class responsibilities

Demonstration of Ability

Be able to demonstrate all previous requirements.


Sustain 10 minutes of aerobic exercise
2 x 20 press-ups
2 x 30 sit-ups
2 x 40 Half squats

Hand Techniques (Soo Gi)

Simultaneous low block (Ha Dan Mahk Kee) and rear high block (Sang Dan Mahk Kee) in back stance (Hu Gul Jaseh)
Simultaneous low punch (Ha Dan Kong Kyuk) and reverse high punch (Teul Oh Sang Dan Kong Kyuyk) in front stance (Chun Gul Jaseh).
Simultaneous low knife hand block (Ha Dan Soo Do Mahk Kee) and rear high knife hand block (Sang Dan Soo Do Mahk Kee) in back stance (Hu Gul Jaseh).

Leg Techniques

Jumping hook kick (E Dan Hu Ri Gi Cha Gi) in sparring stance (Dae Ryun Jaseh)
Jumping short spinning back kick (E Dan Dwi Ahneso Pahkuro Cha Gi) in sparring stance (Dae Ryun Jaseh)
Reverse roundhouse kick (Peet Cha Gi)

Staff (Bong)

Be able to demonstrate a proficient use of the Bong in basic stances (Jaseh), with blocking (Mahk Kee) and striking (Kong Kyuk) techniques.

Sparring (Dae Ryun)

One step sparring (Il Soo Sik Dae Ryun) 13 to 16 (Ship Sam Bon to Ship Yuk Bon)
Free sparring (Ja Yu Dae Ryun) one to one (minimum 2 fights)

Self Defence (Ho Sin Sool)

Cross wrist sleeve grip 1 to 4 (Il Bon to Sa Bon)

Breaking (Kyok Pa)

Hand techniques (Soo Gi) of choice to two separate ¾ inch breaker boards-adults only.
Jumping roundhouse kick (E Dan Dollyo Cha Gi) to a ¾ inch breaker board
Women and children under 16 years may select two kicking techniques (Jok Gi) of choice.
